Lauren D’Souza (she/her) is an artist-turned-marketer who founded Ujjo after a friend dared her to throw a dash of hot sauce into her coffee. (It tasted horrible, but it got the gears turning: was there a way to make coffee spicy without masking its underlying flavor?) What started as a joke quickly turned into a side hustle, and in October 2020 Lauren left her corporate marketing job to lean into Ujjo full-time. Outside of Ujjo, Lauren is a classically-trained pianist who always makes time for yoga, new restaurants, or a good book.
What inspired Ujjo?
One fateful morning in 2020, a friend dared me to throw some hot sauce in my coffee. So I did...and it was awful. But it got the gears turning. As an Indian-American, I grew up drinking my grandmother's spiced chai, and so I started to wonder...why can't we have that same experience for coffee?
How would you describe Ujjo to a friend?
Ujjo is the first hot sauce for coffee. With zero vinegar and a subtle sweetener base, Ujjo uses comforting ingredients like cinnamon, vanilla, and powdered chilis to create the perfect balance of sweet and heat in your favorite drink.
What are your individual core values?
I tell people that my main core value is "whistle while you work." In my eyes, life is too short not to do what you enjoy! I love finding ways to have fun in everything I'm doing, both inside and outside of work, and I try to help everyone else on my team find that same sense of fun.
How do your friend's describe you?
How do you want to be remembered?
I hope we'll be remembered for bringing a little spark of fun and creativity to the coffee world, and for putting a smile on our customers' faces!
