Fiona McDougall (she/her) met her partner, Matthew Seccafien (he/him) in design school. Life and business partners, they ran a design studio together for 8 years before starting to create their own products. In 2018, they adopted their cat Minou, Pawzzles' Chief Testing Officer, and he became their muse.
What inspired Pawzzles?
We started Pawzzles as a fun way to repurpose wood from our other business, Fondfolio! Plus, our cat Minou is FIV+, and lost most of his vision to a bad eye infection that he got when he was a stray. He loves to hunt, and will employ his other senses to help him track down treats. Pawzzles came about as a great way to entertain him!
How would you describe Pawzzles to a friend?
Pawzzles are handmade puzzles for cats that promote mental and physical activity. That being said, we don’t think a Pawzzle should replace daily interactive playtime. We always try to play with Minou for at least 30 minutes per day, usually in 10-15 minute sessions after each meal, when he’s at his friskiest. It’s a good way to bond! Sometimes though, your cat wants attention when you have a meeting, or are otherwise unavailable. In these cases, a Pawzzle is a great way to focus that energy. And if you need a change from Netflix, it’s also pretty entertaining to watch!
We also have pledged to donate 10% of each sale to animal welfare initiatives, and give to a combination of local cat-based charities, such as the Toronto Cat Rescue (where we adopted Minou), and the Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund.
