Michelle Tu (she/her) is a biologist turned creative entrepreneur, who started Modern Theory as a side project while transitioning from skincare founder to candlemaker.
What inspired Modern Theory?
To calm my stress, I started pouring candles as a hobby, and gifting them to friends. During this time, I focused on creating fresh, sophisticated scents like the ones in my favorite boutiques... but without the hefty price tag. Soon, people were asking for them left and right, so I decided to turn my hobby into a bonafide business.
How would you describe Modern Theory to a friend?
Modern Theory is also a female-founded, minority-owned small business that is a member of 1% For The Planet and committed to social good. All of our packaging can be recycled and repurposed and 5% of sales from our featured collections are donated to non-profits, including Madre International, SF Homeless Prenatal Program, and Teach For All.
