Natalie Lennick (she/her) is founder of Green Ablutions, a haircare brand offering sustainable options that match the performance of traditional products. She lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with her family.
What inspired Green Ablutions?
I used to believe recycling was the answer. Then I found out how little of my bin was actually being recycled; most of it was being burned! All of this horrified me. I started to look for ways to lower my impact and reduce single-use plastics. Buying bar soap, wax wraps, and shopping from bulk bins with my own reusable bags were many of the changes I made. It wasn’t entirely plastic-free, but in just a few months my recycling bin went to almost empty. With all of these new changes, I couldn’t find the products I wanted for my hair. Liquid shampoo came in wasteful plastic bottles and bar soap was terrible for my hair. This was my spark. I channeled my eco-anxiety into making a product I needed, and started a business that gave back to the things I loved. Since then, Green Ablutions has stopped thousands of plastic bottles from polluting our oceans and provided funding for the care of hundreds of endangered sea turtle hatchlings.
How would you describe Green Ablutions to a friend?
The name Green Ablutions comes from the belief that we should be mindful of the environment in our everyday choices: Green for the Earth, and Ablutions meaning to wash ourselves with intent. Our society has been very focused on promoting self-care, but we can’t care for ourselves without also taking care of our planet.
Green Ablutions was founded on a promise to make our world a better place. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the foundation of our business. Every vegan, cruelty-free and plastic-free bar replaces up to 3 plastic bottles. Our zero-waste processes ensure nothing ends up in landfills or as pollution in the ocean. All our packaging is made from recycled paper printed with vegetable based inks, which can either be re-recycled or home composted. Our products are delivered using renewable and carbon neutral methods, and best of all, 10% of all our sales support endangered sea turtles. Did you know every rescued sea turtle is found with ocean plastic pollution in their intestines? Plastic bags and bottles floating in the ocean just happen to look like their favorite food: jellyfish! Every Green Ablutions purchase make the oceans a healthier place for sea turtles.
